In this excerpt from a longer autobiographical work, Mace recounts his time in service and the different experiences he had. He begins with his induction and training as an artilleryman, continues to relate how he changed units several times, eventually to a combat engineer unit that went with the 28th Infantry and cleared land mines ahead of the other soldiers.
